Macquarie brings broker, direct home loans under one leader

Macquarie Bank has reshuffled its home loan leadership, with its head of broker sales now also overseeing direct home loans.

Wendy Brown, who was Macquarie’s executive director and head of broker distribution, has now been promoted to executive director, head of home loan, and commercial broker sales.

Macquarie told Broker Daily that the change was to “bring these teams closer together and create a more consistent experience for customers throughout the life of their loan”.

It said: “Brokers remain the key focus for us, with around 95 per cent of our mortgage flows coming through the broker channel.”

Brown has been at Macquarie for over eight years, becoming the head of broker home loans in 2019.

The move comes alongside a broader leadership reshuffle at Macquarie, with current CEO Shemara Wikramanayake set to retire in November and Greg Ward appointed as her successor.

Ward has led Macquarie Bank’s banking and financial services (BFS) group for the past 14 years and will be succeeded as group head of BFS by Ben Perham, who has served as head of personal banking for the past decade.

Macquarie maintains strong broker performance

The leadership changes come as Macquarie continues to perform strongly across key measures of broker engagement, with the bank remaining the most-used lender in the latest Broker Pulse survey by Agile Market Intelligence.

Macquarie received applications from 47 per cent of broker respondents in August, ahead of ANZ at 46 per cent and Commonwealth Bank of Australia at 34 per cent.

The bank also recorded the fastest turnaround time among large ADIs, with brokers reporting an average of one business day to an initial credit decision.

This compared with an average of 3.4 business days across large ADIs and 7.4 days among non-ADIs.

Macquarie also recorded the highest three-month average broker experience rating among large ADIs at 96 per cent, covering June, July, and August.

Its performance extended to the people brokers deal with during the lending process, with 91 per cent of brokers reporting a positive experience with Macquarie’s BDMs in August, the highest rating among the most commonly used ADIs.

Macquarie also recorded a 95 per cent positive rating for its credit assessors, again the highest among the most commonly used ADIs.
