Justin Picker - Avid Property Investor Wins Regional Broker of the Year

Newcomer to the industry, Justin Picker, has recently won the Regional Broker of the Year for 2024. He credits his success to his experience as a property investor and his unique approach to mortgage broking.

How did you start down this career path?
I first gained an interest in the mortgage space after buying two small investment properties and going through the finance process a few times. After leaving university, I didn’t have any banking or lending experience, so I completed the Certificate IV in Finance and Mortgage Broking. Essentially, I learned on the go, and being a client going through the process helped immensely. I started in mortgage broking in 2019 after a friend started a buyer’s agent company. Partnering with this buyer’s agent, who is now a primary referral source for my business, allowed me to take a leap of faith and start small. Since then, we have grown from just myself to a team of 10 staff.
What inspires you in your role/industry? Why?
The privilege of helping people build wealth through property is incredibly fulfilling. Every day presents new scenarios, and being a trusted advisor for many individuals seeking to expand their property portfolios is an honor. This role offers a unique opportunity to make a positive impact on clients’ financial futures.
What’s your approach to customer service that separates you from the rest?
With 10 staff members now on board, we strive to provide a seamless experience for our clients and ensure maximum efficiency from our team. This involves leveraging advancements in technology and implementing multiple checkpoints and touchpoints with customers to keep them informed and cared for at every step of the process.
How do you innovate and stay ahead of industry trends?
The use of technology is crucial in staying ahead. We actively engage with clients through social media and video content for updates. Additionally, we are always testing and implementing new technologies to continually improve our processes and maintain our competitive edge.
What is the toughest challenge you’ve faced in your role? How did you overcome it?
Maintaining work-life balance and setting boundaries has been one of the toughest challenges. In a world where everything is on-demand, this is no different for broking. Although it’s still a struggle, we are making progress by setting clearer boundaries and ensuring time is allocated for both work and personal life.
What are some of your goals for the next 5 years?
Over the next five years, my goal is to continue growing my team into leaders. I’m not aiming for world domination but rather to provide our services to as many clients as possible while ensuring security for my staff and family. I want to build a supportive and successful environment where both our clients and team members can thrive.
