Non-major adopts contactless technology

Bendigo Bank has announced that its customers will now be able to make purchases on their smartphones using Android Pay.

The bank announced last Tuesday that the ‘mobile wallet’ is now available to all Bendigo Bank credit and debit card holders with an Android smartphone.

Bendigo Bank’s chief customer officer Marnie Baker explained that the app offers customer greater choice and flexibility in how they can make payments.

“As one of the first nationally-operating banks to offer Android Pay in Australia, we’re excited to be a part of this revolution in the way we think about and use money,” Ms Baker elaborated.

“With technology evolving at a rapid pace we want to ensure we’re delivering the functionality our customers are asking for, both by partnering with other innovative organisations, such as Google, and by investing in developments of our own,” she said.

Android Pay enables Android users to tap and pay with their phones at more than 750,000 payment terminals in Australian shops.

The app is secure as card information is never sent with a payment, instead a virtual account number is used, providing additional security.

Bendigo Bank also encouraged customers to download its new Protect+Pay app.

The app, developed with the support of MasterCard, gives Android customers extra security functionality, while allowing them an easy in-app sign-up process.

“Protect+Pay gives our customers greater control over security features for their credit and debit cards,” Ms Baker added.

The Android Pay and Protect+Pay apps are available now for download from Google Play.
