Suncorp has confirmed it has raised more than $950,000 via its Spirit to Cure initiative, a cycling-focused challenge intended to help fund cancer research, support and prevention.
Created in tandem with cancer-support cycling charity Tour de Cure, Spirit to Cure is held across Queensland, NSW and Victoria with each state holding its own respective cycling event.
According to Suncorp, the initiative has already attracted more than 1,000 riders.
The event initially began in November with riders, alongside walkers and support crew, travelling a 315-kilometre journey from Toowoomba to Brisbane over three days.
Earlier this month, riders and walkers in NSW travelled a three-day 310-kilometre round trip from Sydney via Bowral and Wollongong.
However, despite Victoria’s event being scheduled for February 2022, Suncorp has revealed that the raised funds so far have already surpassed the initial fundraising target of $500,000.
According to the non-major banking group, the raised funds will be used to support its Brighter Future’s foundation partners, including the Toowoomba Hospital Foundation, Cancer Council Queensland, Cancer Council NSW and Koala Kids.
The funds are also said to contribute to Tour de Cure’s cancer research and prevention grants.
Suncorp Bank chief executive Clive van Horen said Suncorp was excited to be partnering with Tour de Cure.
“I lost my first wife to cancer, so I understand the impact cancer has on people’s lives,” Mr van Horen said.
“Spirit to Cure builds on the amazing passion and caring spirit of our own people, who have jumped on board with great energy and commitment.
“Together, we will make a real difference.”
