ANZ extends Apple Pay and Android Pay to another half a million cardholders

ANZ, which was the first major bank to make Apple Pay and Android Pay available to its five million customers in Australia, has now extended the offer to its MasterCard holders.

The major bank announced on Tuesday that its MasterCard customers can now make convenient, quick and secure payments with the contactless technology.

This comes after the bank was the first of the big four to offer Apple Pay in May and Android Pay in July this year.

More than 500,000 ANZ customers with a MasterCard credit card are now able to use the technology to make purchases wherever contactless payments are accepted.

Actual card numbers are not stored on Apple’s servers or devices used to access Apple Pay. Instead, a unique device account number is assigned, encrypted and securely stored in a secure element of Apple devices, and each transaction is authorised with a one-time, unique security code.

Similarly, Android Pay uses tokenisation security to protect card numbers by never sharing them with the merchant or saving them on the device.

ANZ managing director of product and marketing, Matt Boss commented: “Our customers have responded really well to the launch of Apple Pay and now they can make mobile payments with MasterCard credit cards as well.”

“Our customers want choice in the way they bank and where they bank, and we know our MasterCard customers, both consumers and merchants will be pleased with this news,” he added.

MasterCard Australasia’s head of market development and innovation, Garry Duursma explained that Australians are fast adopters with more than 7 out of 10 MasterCard transactions now made using contactless technology at over 750,000 terminals across Australia.
