ANZ announced the appointment of the new CEO at the back end of last year, alongside current CEO Shayne Elliott’s retirement.
Nuno Matos will be heading up the company in the new position. Starting from 12 May, Matos will also be appointed to the boards of ANZ Group Holdings Limited and Australia and New Zealand Banking Group Limited as an executive director.
He was supposed to commence the role from 3 July 2025; however, due to “early fulfilment of his commitments with his previous employer”, the start date was brought forward.
Matos said he is excited to make the move to Melbourne and “start the next phase of ANZ’s evolution.”
He is transitioning from the CEO position at HSBC, where he headed up wealth and personal banking.
Matos was responsible for 87,000 employees and around 40 million customers across 35 markets.
ANZ Group Chairman Paul O’Sullivan said on the announcement: “With the leadership transition well progressed, we are pleased that Nuno has been able to secure the early fulfilment of his commitments with his previous employer and bring forward his start date.
“I would like to thank Shayne for leading an orderly handover as we enter the second half of our financial year.”
Current CEO Elliott will continue in the role until 11 May.
Further to the CEO announcement, other leadership changes were announced.
Jane Halton will be exiting the role of ANZ Group director and Alison Gerry will join the ANZ Group and bank boards from 9 May.
Halton has had a distinguished career with the major, joining the board in 2016. She has held positions as chair with the digital business and technology committee; the ethics, environment, social and governance committee; and the Suncorp Bank company board, Norfina Limited.
“After a distinguished career in the public service, Jane has made a valuable contribution to the Board and shareholders over many years. Her experience in public health was particularly beneficial as we navigated the COVID pandemic and we thank her for her service,” said O’Sullivan.
“On behalf of all shareholders, I’d like to welcome Alison to the group and bank boards and know that she will make a valuable contribution given her extensive financial services experience, particularly in the areas of finance, risk and trading.”
Gerry has held the position of director at ANZ since 2019. Earlier roles included the director of Kiwibank. She will retire from the ANZ board on 1 April 2025 and will stand for election at the 2025 annual general meeting.
