ANZ names new chief for Indonesia

A former managing director of ANZ’s corporate banking division has been appointed as the group’s new chief for its Indonesian operations.

Vishnu Shahaney will step into the role from ANZ Singapore, where he has worked as CEO since 2010. Mr Shahaney has also held other senior management positions in the major bank, serving as managing director of corporate banking in Australia and head of transaction banking and specialised lending for the Asia-Pacific, Europe and America.

ANZ’s chief executive of international banking Farhan Faruqui said Mr Shahaney is a highly experienced international banker with a sound knowledge of the global landscape, having spent more than three decades leading various businesses at ANZ in Australia and Asia.

“I’m confident he will grow returns from our Indonesian business as we consolidate our leading position connecting institutional clients with opportunities across [the] Asia Pacific,” Mr Faruqui said.

Mr Shahaney will be taking over from Joseph Abraham, who will be leaving ANZ at the end of his term after more than seven years in the role.

“Since 2008, Joseph has led the ANZ franchise in Indonesia, establishing our strong position in institutional banking and our leading retail presence among foreign banks, Mr Faruqui said.

“I would like to thank Joseph for his dedication and contribution to our business over the years.”

Mr Shahaney is expected to commence his new role within a few weeks, and will be based in Jakarta.
