ANZ appoints risk expert

ANZ has strengthened its compliance team by appointing one of its own bankers to the chief officer role.

Michael Liarakos steps into the role of chief compliance officer at the major bank, having been ANZ’s group manager of internal audit since 2008.

Mr Liarakos has more than 30 years’ experience in audit, risk and compliance roles, and replaces Mark Evans, who has been appointed ANZ managing director of transactional banking.

ANZ’s group chief risk officer, Nigel Williams, said it is pleasing to have appointed a banker with significant risk and compliance experience to the chief officer role.

"[Mr Liarakos’s] strong values and leadership will be an important asset as we look to further strengthen our compliance function," he said.

Sandra Burns has been appointed ANZ’s acting group general manager of internal audit while the bank undertakes an internal recruitment process to find a permanent replacement.
